Not every project calls for clinically perfect glass. Sometimes the image needs to breathe, to flare, fall off at the edges, carry a little weight from decades of optical history. That’s exactly what the Leitz HEKTOR was designed to deliver, and it’s now part of the Camalot rental inventory.
What is the Leitz HEKTOR?
The HEKTOR is Leitz Cine’s entry into the mirrorless cinema lens market, announced in September 2025. Unlike most modern cinema lenses that aim for maximum sharpness and neutral rendering, the HEKTOR takes a different path. It is built in the style of lenses from the 1980s and 90s, using exclusively spherical elements to recreate the optical character of that era.
The design is inspired by two iconic optical traditions: the classic Leica M lenses from the 1930s and 1950s, and Petzval lenses known for their swirling bokeh and distinctive field curvature. The HEKTOR blends these influences into something that feels both familiar and entirely its own.
The result is a lens family defined by dynamic flares, natural falloff toward the edges of the frame, field curvature that gives depth to the image, and a subtle spherical aberration that adds painterly softness wide open. At the same time, Leitz has applied modern coatings to keep veiling glare under control and significantly reduce chromatic aberration — so you get character without chaos.
The Kit We Carry
Our Leitz HEKTOR Lens Kit contains the full set of six prime lenses:
- Leitz HEKTOR 18mm T2.1 Ø80
- Leitz HEKTOR 25mm T2.1 Ø80
- Leitz HEKTOR 35mm T2.1 Ø80
- Leitz HEKTOR 50mm T2.1 Ø80
- Leitz HEKTOR 73mm T2.1 Ø80
- Leitz HEKTOR 100mm T2.1 Ø80
Every lens in the set shares the same T2.1 aperture, 80mm front diameter, and Full Frame image circle coverage, which means consistent behaviour across the entire focal range and no surprises when you’re swapping glass on set. The lenses feature user-interchangeable mounts, with E-Mount included as standard and RF-Mount available as an optional configuration.
Who Are These Lenses For?
The HEKTOR is not designed for productions that want a clean, neutral, invisible image. It’s designed for productions that want to say something with the image itself.
If you’re shooting a period drama, an arthouse feature, a music video, or a high-end commercial where the visual identity needs to stand out, the HEKTOR gives you a look that is genuinely difficult to replicate in post. The character is in the glass, not in a plugin.
Cinematographers who grew up studying the images made on older spherical glass, the warmth, the slight unevenness, the way highlights misbehave in the best possible way — will feel immediately at home with the HEKTOR.
The set is also a strong choice for documentary and narrative work where you want the image to feel handcrafted rather than manufactured. Wide open at T2.1, the lenses draw with a quality that modern, fully corrected glass simply cannot replicate.
A Modern Lens with an Old Soul
What makes the HEKTOR genuinely compelling is not just its character, but its practicality. These are purpose-built cinema lenses, not adapted vintage glass. That means consistent focus breathing behaviour, reliable gearing for follow focus systems, and a uniform 80mm front diameter across all six focal lengths for quick filter swaps on set.
The user-interchangeable mount system also means the same set can move across different camera systems without sending anything back to the rental house. One kit, maximum flexibility.
